A lot happened this week within the games industry, and we are going to try and cover the most important topics here. Keep reading to see what happened in gaming for the week of 2/22/2015!

The Order: 1886 flops with reviewers

The reviews for The Order: 1886 started pouring in this Thursday and the outlook isn’t so good. With a disappointing score of 65, it is one of the lowest reviewed console exclusives on the market. Critics blame the game’s short run-time, as well as its familiar third-person shooter gameplay, for its overall “meh”-ness. The game does look good, though, and boasts stunning visuals. We haven’t had a chance to get our hands on the game yet, but based on the reviews we can tell that the game suffers the same fate as an Xbox One exclusive, Ryse, in that it is beautiful but flawed in almost every other aspect. Fans also seem to be disappointed with Ryse The Order: 1886 since it has a 6.4 average user rating. But, it is best to take metacritic and its user ratings with a grain of salt, as they only show the averages and sometimes include people who give 0s through 3s simply because they are fanboys. You have been warned.

Black Mesa site has hidden hints

We here at GRU (especially Cooper) are HUGE Half-Life fans. The original Half-Life was released in 1998 and it changed first-person shooters forever. It introduced intricate story-telling into the first-person genre, as well as physics based puzzles. Back in 2012, a mod called Black Mesa was released, and it was a recreation of the original Half-Life with modernized graphics and gameplay, as well as revamped maps to make the game flow better. After the mod’s initial release, it was one of the first games to be greenlit on Steam’s Greenlight program for a full release via steam. Since then, though, not much has been heard from the developers and the progress on the mod turned game. The original release of the mod was only about ¾ done, and was missing the final “Xen” part of the game. They promised that the final release will come with this final section, as well as an updated multiplayer component from the original game. Recently, a site was found that had a lot of hints towards the development, and possibly even an announcement of the official release of the game. As soon as more pops up we will let you know!

Machinima hit with layoffs

After last month’s loss of the entire Inside Gaming team, it seemed as though Machinima had a lot of catching up to do in order to get back to where it was just last year. Unfortunately, that road is going to be even more difficult now that it has laid off 13 employees, as well as cancelling a show and an entire channel, Machinima Respawn. The future of the company doesn’t look so bright, and if you ask us they seem to be making all the wrong decisions. If you are one of the unfortunate people to lose a job over this, fret not because it seems as though Machinima’s days are numbered anyway. Still, people losing jobs sucks, and one would think that Machinima would be trying hard to keep its content creators, rather than firing them.

Kanye West making “Only One” video game

In an interview on The Breakfast Club radio station, the ever-so-careful-to-never-do-or-say-anything-stupid Kanye West stated that he is working on a video game based on his song “Only One”. The song, and the game, are about Kanye’s mother going through the different gates of heaven, with the goal being to get her closest to the light as possible. All we know is that this is definitely happening, and it has been worked on for about six months, but other than that, details are scarce. It’s safe to assume that the game will probably be available on mobile devices, considering Kim Kardashian’s surprising success with her own game last year. Unlike that abomination, though, I don’t really have an issue with this. Unless it is completely tasteless, what Kanye is trying to do here is extremely personal to him. The man definitely has the money, so why not let him do it? It’s certainly not the craziest thing he’s ever done. I’m not going to be in the camp that immediately bashes anything the man does. Even if the game is complete garbage like the Kardashian game, enjoyment will still be had making fun of it. Either way, it’s interesting to see famous people who have no ties to the game industry suddenly showing a lot of interest.

New Rock Band sequel possible?

This Monday, Harmonix, the developer of the Rock Band franchise, announced that it would be releasing two new DLC packs for Rock Band on last-gen systems. This announcement comes as a surprise considering that nothing has been released for the game in a couple of years, with fans believing that the franchise was dead. No official announcements have been made, but hints on twitter and other sites have all but confirmed that a new Rock Band game for current-gen consoles is in the works. We assume an announcement will come sometime this week, and if it’s big enough we will report on it as it happens.
