Today is a great time for video games. Much like the movie industry, anybody who wants to put in the time and effort to make a video game can. Indie games have only recently come into the limelight with great hits like Minecraft, Super Meat Boy, and Braid. The indie game market seems to have more success than the retail market in terms of bridging the gap between casual players and hardcore players. Indie games are integral to the maturation of the industry as a whole. Microsoft saw this many years ago when it first introduced the the Indie Game Marketplace over Xbox Live, and allowed anyone who put forth effort to release their content. Since its release, the marketplace has been plagued with mostly rushed together “games” that have been created only to gain a quick buck. Some companies even specialize in making games that are clearly only made to net them some cash. But there are a few gems sprinkled through the marketplace that really stick out and vouch for the Indie portion of the industry. That is why we are doing Indie Mondays, to show off the indie games that truly deserve recognition. Whether a game is on PC, Xbox, or even Playstation, a great indie game deserves to be noticed. So to start off, we will look at one of the highest selling and highest rated indie games on the Marketplace:

IMAGWZIT

Even when you first read the title of “I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1” you laugh a little. All this game is a top down shooter that doesn’t try any gimmicks other than being a fun time. The game allows you and up to four friends to shoot your way through hordes and hordes of zombies. The game has different varieties of zombies and enemies to keep things fresh, and in some of the later waves things get pretty hectic and challenging, even with four people. Throughout the game the background song can be heard that simply describes the game, with lyrics like it’s just a dollar, and the chorus I Made A Game With Zombies In It. I would say charging $5 for this would be a stretch, and maybe $3 would be justified. But no, this game only costs $1, and for that one dollar you get maybe an afternoon or two of having fun with your friends. This game is beautifully simple and is basically the measuring stick for anything on the Indie Game Marketplace.

The game plays like a typical top-down shooter. The background and enemies change over time the longer the player survives.

I would also like to note that anyone who is interested in making an indie game themselves should consider watching “Indie Game: The Movie” which can be found on Netflix or at various stores. Here’s a link to their website: http://buy.indiegamethemovie.com/
